Every Love Story is a Ghost Story

Every Love Story is a Ghost Story
The installation Every Love Story is a Ghost Story by Belgium-based Taiwanese artist Pei-Hsuan Wang (°1987) unfolds as a polyphonic narrative about identity and diversity, playfully and poetically woven into the local context of Kortrijk, incorporating elements of East-Asian folklore and mythology. At the heart of the installation is an altar, where Wang brings together displaced objects and sculptures from various faiths alongside her own creations. Surrounding it, we encounter twirling fly repellent ribbons and spinning washing machines washing unique contents: elements that evoke her birthplace, poetry, survival, love and the history of the exhibition space. They refer to her Taiwanese background, the history of the building, literature sources and stereotypes about East Asian migrants. Additionally, a video offers a personal tribute to her family, particularly her mother and nephew. The video, featuring a boy building a castle with dumpling dough, is placed amongst a fort of boxes, prompting us to reflect on the legacy we bequeath to future generations.
